Tobacco and the Economy

Tobacco use costs the economy over R42 billion in lost productivity and tobacco related deaths. This is against R12 billion contribution in taxes by the tobacco industry.

According to the Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products (REEP, University of Cape Town) the Department of Health loses R14.48 billion in tobacco related health care costs.
